Name: Cortez
Race: Unknown (presumed human)
Rank: Pirate king
Likes: Plundering treasure from people on the sea
Dislikes: Treasure raiders trying to steal his booty

Once, about a millenium or so ago, Cortez was the most feared pirate to ever sail the seas. He was ruthless and vicious, and would use any means neccesary to steal teasure from ocean-going folk. After gathering heaps of treasure, he hid it in the one place where he thought no one would ever find it: the remote island of Keelhaul Key. During the time when a terrible demon known as the Shadow Queen terrorized the land, a brave, stalwart Koopa brought the Sapphire Star to Keelhaul Key, where he tried to hide it from evil. However, Cortez found the unfortunate Koopa, and destroyed him, keeping the gem for himself. He eventually perished after protecting his treasure for many years. His death led to the belief that Keelhaul Key is now haunted, and Cortez's restless spirit still haunts the island, forever protecting his improbably large treasure horde. When Mario, the merchant Flavio, and his crew (including Lord Crump) sailed to the cursed island, Mario had to venture deep into Pirate's Grotto, Cortez's eternal resting place. He fought Cortez in an epic duel for the Sapphire Star. However, as it turns out, Cortez didn't like the Star anyway, yet he became furious when he found out that Flavio's most precious keepsake was one of Cortez's gems! He aided Mario against Lord Crump and his X-Naut army, along with his undead servants, the Embers. He then became friends with Mario, claiming that guarding his treasure for all eternity was almost as boring as death itself. He now stays on his ship, The Black Skull, at Rogueoort harbor, allowing people to sail to the no longer cursed Keelhaul Key if they so want to.
