More about Hammer Brother...
Games: SMB, SMB3, NSMB, etc.

Hammer Brother is probably the most dangerous non-boss enemy from Mario's NES platformers.  It's not only that he can peg you at a distance with one of his oddly endless supply of hammers, but also that he jumps erratically between tosses, and often appears alongside a buddy.  It seems fitting that a Hammer Bro would be the final enemy before the last Bowser in SMB1, and I personally had more trouble getting past it than Bowser to win my first time.  Throw in Hammer Bro's SMB3 cousins - Boomerang Bro, Fire Bro, and Sledge Bro - and you've got the making of a very significant character from Mario's early days.

After SMB3, Hammer Bro seemed to step back from his high-profile for a little while.  In SMW, only a single varient, Amazing Flying Hammer Bro, would appear, as the standard Hammer Bro itself was absent.  Hammer Bro did not appear in Yoshi's Island, and appeared in SMRPG only as an early miniboss.  Hammer Bro was also slow to appear in the 3D titles, taking a pass on Mario 64 and Sunshine before eventually making it into Galaxy.  More recently, though, Hammer Bro has started appearing more often again.  In addition to Galaxy, it and some of its cousins have been seen in the NSMB, Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi series.  Hammer Brother has also been playable in the baseball titles and in Mario Party 8.

Mario has started to be able to run circles around Hammer Bro in the 3D games, and more frequent power-ups help Mario put Hammer Bro in his place in the recent sidescrollers; thus keeping Hammer Bro from regaining the position of fearsome foe it once had.  But it still stands as a symbol of Koopa might, as the tales live on through the words of the ancient gamers...
