Meet Shy Guy, the "other" cute, simple minion.  Shy Guys are known to be a very versatile species and have been seen walking on stilts, piloting submarines, and wielding spears, just to name a few variations, some of which go under different names.  But the simple, garden variety Shy Guy is one of the simplest foes throughout the Mario series, right next to Goomba for easiest to abuse even if it's not known for being squishy.  Shy Guy was the main enemy in SMB2, then, after being absent for a while, it reappeared in Yoshi's Island and has become Yoshi's most become foe throughout all his games.  Shy Guys also appeared in Paper Mario, where they became known for being mischievous and were the main foe in chapter four.  Despite having a very spotty record for appearing in major titles, Shy Guy appears in many fringe titles such as the sports games, and is probably one of the most recognized enemy species in the series today.

As a low-level grunt, it's not as though there were many expectations for Shy Guy to do well in the Sports Hall, and indeed, he's had a tough time.  He actually would have qualified for Round Three in Season One had not the rules been different back then, and his journey that season was ended in Round Two by Muddy Buddy.  Since then, despite wins against a couple intimidating figures, he has had very little success.  He was knocked out of Season Nine by Iggy.
