A member of the so-called 8-Bit Club, Snifit appears to be a Shy Guy with a cannon on its mask that allows it to spit bullets.  In Mario 2 it could fire bullets in three different patterns depending on the color of its robes.  Unlike its well known Shy Guy cousin, Snifit has sunken into obscurity, but as well as a brief appearance in Yoshi's Island it also made a noteable appearance in Super Mario RPG, in which three appeared as personal assistants to Booster.  Each one can be fought on the way up Booster's tower.  None is very hard alone though they're sturdier than your average foe.  It's possible to make additional Snifits join Booster's team later.  They still shoot bullets, as do a similar enemy in Booster's Tower known as Spookum.
