Do you remember when Mario would collect the rare Tanooki Suit in Super Mario Bros. 3 and could turn into a Thwomp, a balloon, and a Spiny? ... Me neither.  A statue, briefly, sure, but overall, the Tanooki was not really known as a transformative instrument.  But combine the simple Goomba with a Tanooki, um, Leaf, is it now?  And suddenly you've got this guy who manages to be both dangerous and cute at the same time and who may even be a better shapeshifter than Doopliss and Shadoo.  Not only can Tanoomba transform into a Mario- or Luigi-lookalike, as we saw in Superstar Saga, but inanimate objects as well, as shown in Partners in Time, which we have not seen the other shapeshifters do at least within the games.  In the end Mario may have overcome his kind fairly easily provided that he did not stray from Beanbean Castle too soon, but he may be one of the most awe-inspiring non-boss enemies throughout the series.

Raccoon-tailed Goombas appeared prominently in Mario 3D Land, but as these could not transform, it is not clear if these were Tanoombas exactly.

Tanoomba is not the only shapeshifter to have done well in the Sports Hall but he was the first to reach the finals when he surged to the top in Season Three but was defeated by Kamek.  Despite not being successful since that season, he's back for the Season Ten Tournament as Seed 23, and has started off with a first round win over Zeus Guy.  His next opponent will be either Larry or Jr. Troopa.
