The Machine’s Hour

By Mary Beyer

Hip woke up suddenly by his new Chomp pet. It started barking and chomping, indicating it wanted food. Hip tossed it a leg of Reznor. ‘Oh, why didn’t I take a Sparky? It only gives you a night-light,’ Hip thought. As he prepared to jump out of bed, he forgot that he had let a sharp mace on the floor from last night. He jumped out of bed and landed, with his right foot, square on the mace. A shrill, sharp screech emitted from his mouth. Then a surge of indescribable pain shot up his leg and into his mind.

"Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!" he yelled.

Hop, who was eating breakfast, ran up the stairs to see what was wrong. He opened Hip’s bedroom door and saw Hip writhing in pain with a really deep cut in his right foot. Hop decided to call King Dad.

"Daaaaaaaaaaaaaad! Get up here QUICK!" Hop called. The sound of thunder on the steps got closer until it stopped by the bedroom door. Bowser walked in and saw what had happened to Hip. He suddenly started roaring out orders to the other Koopalings.

"Hip! Get a bandage! Kootie Pie! Get some ice cubes in a bag! Cheatsy! Call ANY doctor! Move it! GO!" Bowser yelled so loud it rocked the castle.

Ten minutes later the best doctor in the Mushroom Kingdom was inspecting Hip’s foot. He said that it was clearly broken and worse, it was shredded beyond repair. Hip was confused, scared, and calm all at once. The doctor was not really heard of that much; he just appeared a month ago.

"There is a new technology, though," he said, grinning deviously. "It involves replacing the appendage with a robotic part. It isn’t painful, and it will help a great deal."

"How much?" Bowser asked.

"Oh, about 999 coins. Oh wait. Make that 750," the doctor answered.

"Well," Bowser looked around, "we’ll take it. Here." He handed the doctor the coins. The doctor said he would take Hip and get the foot attached. It would take three days. Hip went with the doctor towards the forest.

The next day, Big Mouth fell down the stairs. He broke his arm, and the doctor returned without Hip. He said it would take 500 coins to fix it. Big Mouth went into the forest.

The next few days, Kootie Pie twisted her ankle, Kooky blew an invention up in his face and blinded one of his eyes, Bully ripped a few muscles while weight-lifting, and Cheatsy broke a hand and it’s fingers. ‘Something weird is going on,’ Hop thought. ‘Hip and Big Mouth and the others have been gone more than a week. And how come they all were taken by that doctor?" Then, a week later, they were all returned. Kooky had a cool-looking glowing metal eye, Cheatsy had a titanium steel hand and fingers, Kootie Pie had a shinning metal foot in neon pink, and Bully was decked out in glittering gold steel from neck to feet. Hip had a deep blue neon foot and Big Mouth had a cool silver arm.

"Um," Bowser was at a loss for words.

"Cool," Hop said.

Over the weeks everything was normal. Hop still had not been injured… until one day…

"Aieeeeeee!" Hop screeched. Minutes later the doctor was examining Hop’s recently acquired cracked rib. None of the other Koopalings were in shock but they asked if they could go to the forest with the doctor, whose first name was Mushroomvich. Bowser paid the piper and said they could all go.

Hours later all the Koopalings and Mushroomvich were at the forest fortress. Hop was asleep while Mushroomvich repaired him. Mushroomvich chuckled to himself and an evil grin spread across his face. A thought crept into his mind. ‘Soon…’

As Hop woke up, he felt a shiver run down his spine. He felt that he was not normal anymore. Mushroomvich smiled at him.

“Feeling better?” he asked. “Come on, let’s get you back to the castle. They all walked to the castle and went in. Bowser was sitting in the throne room, obviously bored. Mushroomvich cleared his throat and Bowser looked up.

“I told you… oh. Sorry, I’ve been visited by Bowyer a lot. He wants to make up for what he did. Let him moan and groan. I don’t care, he’s nothing without Smithy, the jerk,” Bowser said.

Mushroomvich growled suddenly and then was calm. He nodded at the other Koopalings. They drew out their magic wands and cried “FORMATION, INITIATE!” They started to rotate around Mushroomvich. Hop returned to normal but knew something was wrong. Bowser was ready to blow.

“Yardovich!” he growled. “WHAT have you done to my kids?!”

“Smithy transformed me into a Mushroom person right before a was destroyed so if he failed, I could carry out his plans. I needed to become machine again though, so I planted traps for your kids so they would need robotic parts. Then I installed controlling devices in their metal parts. That one, Hop, I did not need. So, goodbye!” Yardovich yelled.

As they went into battle, Hop planned a stratagem. First he attacked with his size-shifter wand power. Then Bowser took half off the small Yardovich and suddenly he blew up.

When the smoke cleared, the Koopalings were looking about, dazed. A week later, everything was back to normal.

“Hip, give that back!” Kooky yelled.

“Not until you tell me what it is!” Hip mocked.

“It will tell us if a Smithy boss is near, now GIVE IT BACK!!!” Kooky yelled again.

Big Mouth was in the front room playing Bowser 64. He was just about to defeat the Mario Bros. for the third and last time in the game. He started shouting, “It’s curtains for you, you’re history, you’ve had it, it’s allll over, revenge is mine, the fat lady has sung, the Super Mario Brothers are no more!” Cheatsy was walking by at the time.

“Enough already, put a sock in it,” Cheatsy said and clamped his hand over Big Mouth’s big mouth. He tried to talk but he couldn’t. Then Cheatsy knocked him out.

And on goes another normal Koopaling day!
