Super Smash RPG: The Fate of Nintendo

By Trollish Beastfighter

Note: This adventure keeps strict attention to an actual inventory, XP points, stats, etc, as if this were a real game, so it would be very helpful to pay attention to all the statistical data in any way possible so that you better understand how everything works.

To Mario, it all looks like another fine day after seven months of hard partying with his friends, even with Bowser’s pranks jazzing everything up. All of the Nintendoverse seems to be flowing peacefully with only Law and Order ruling supreme. Suddenly (like in any good plot), something goes terribly wrong…in cyberspace.

Mr. Game & Watch isn’t really doing anything, when suddenly a massively chaotic and unknown force erupts upon him. Shocked by the horrific energies, Mr. G&W barely manages to escape total deletion by loading himself onto a floppy disk and Emailing himself to a computer in the parallel existence of Nintendoverse, within a red-roofed house labeled “Mario”, someone on a planet named Plit. Mario, after seven months of neglecting the chore, is finally folding his bed sheets when the computer rings its familiar Email tune. He checks it and finds a video clip of his ancient friend G&W.

G&W says, “Mario! Something terrible has happened! My old arch-nemesis, the Ultimate Eliminator, has been slowly gaining power and is unleashing himself upon the universe! If we don’t do something quick, he will destroy all of the universe as we know it! Believe me, we are all in danger of dying a painful death and afterwards becoming his slaves. Now I will explain, The UE is this evil essence that the pantheon of Nintendo has created to bring a certain balance to the Nintendoverse. One of the more powerful gods, by the name of Shigeru Miyamoto, thought that life would be too unbearably boring unless he added a touch of evil within the life of the universe. The gods agreed and brought the evil thoughts of bad guys into existence. The gods, however, decided there should be more. At about the time my early friends and I were created, they brought The UE.  This essence is the thing that causes us to lose our extra lives. It becomes stronger as it takes lives, but also becomes weaker when we power-up and get extra lives, and when more life is created. The gods of the pantheon were careful to bind this power strongly within our spacetime and cyberspace bonds as to restrict his power so that he wouldn’t destroy our souls entirely, but apparently, he had plans of his own. He has broken his bindings and now has gone on an insane rampage. First of all, I need you to acquire the floppy disk that is in your computer.”

Mario takes the floppy disk and G&W holographically projects himself towards the plumber.

“Okay now, I will try to help assist and explain things to you on your adventure. Right now, I’d try to call the first person I could think of to come here to help.”

Mario exclaims, “Oh, why not-a Luigi!”

Mario calls Luigi on a Gameboy Horror Advance. Meanwhile…

Luigi is thrown forcefully to the ground by one of Bowser’s attacks.

Luigi exclaims, “Mamamia! What have I done to deserve this?!”

Bowser replies, “Sorry, Luigi, I’m taking orders from some UE, so you and Mario need to die.”

Mario: Luigi, thanks for coming-a so quickly-a!

Luigi: What? You needed me?

G&W: Yes. What’s going on is…

Mr. Game and Watch explains the plot of the story to Luigi.

Luigi: HOLY CRUD! If only I was-a in better shape.

G&W: Jump into my floppy disk and I’ll heal you.

Luigi obeys and is healed.

G&W: By now, the UE has probably started to recruit soldiers. We need to go.

Luigi: That reminds me, Bowser mentioned-a this UE, so we need to watch-a out for Bowser. Can I exit-a the floppy disk yet?

G&W: I’m afraid not, but Mario will be able to summon you the next time he levels up. When you are summoned, your stats and attacks will be that of his except that he uses fire and you use thunder, and you have a talent used at 5HP or less called Panic Missile.”

Mario leaves his house and enters Mushroom Path.

Mario's Status:
HP: 10/10
NP: 10/10
SP: 1
Attacks:
Jump - 1+1 damage
Hammer - 1-2 damage
Punch - 1-2 damage and can disarm enemies, steal items; gets critical hits more often
Special:
Super Jump - 2NP - Jump damage + 2 or 3 rarely
Super Smash - 2NP - Hammer damage + 2 and rare dizzy effect
Multi-Jump - 4NP - Jump damage + (action commands x 1)
Smash: None
Talent: Popularity haggling (use manually in shops)
Inventory: 100 coins, floppy disk, 1 Mushroom, 1 Syrup.

Mario: Wow! There really is a lot about status! I’m not sure I really understand.

G&W: Don’t worry, you’ll understand as you go. Here’s a brief rundown. Your HP is your health points. When you take damage, it is reduced. If is is reduced to 0, you can’t fight unless a party member revives you. If all of your party falls, the whole universe dies. Your NP is how much energy you have to use special attacks. When you use such a move, you use this meter too. SP is the energy you have for Smash moves. To accumulate one Smash unit, you need 20 Smash points. Smash points are shared throughout your party, and the more party members you get, the more Smash units you get. Another thing, you naturally recover 1 Smash point a turn, but using “focus” restores 3-4 Smash points manually.

Suddenly a Goomba touches Mario. A Spike Goomba and Paragoomba join the group.

G&W: Okay, your first battle. Your options are to attack, use a special attack, focus, defend to reduce damage, or use my Smash move The 100 point Restore, which heals half of everyone’s HP and NP and costs 1 Smash unit. I recommend using an attack. Remember, these normal Goombas have only 2HP and an attack power of 1, except for Spiky, with an attack power of 2. Don’t touch spikes. Unless you get a special ability, you need to jump on flying enemies. When they attack, if you have good timing, you can reduce the damage you take by 1, or with perfect timing, dodge or counterattack.

G&W: Good job! When you win battles, you get XP. Whenever you get 100 XP, you level up! When you or a party member level up, you get HP and NP bonuses, and furthermore, you may experience special powers kicking in. You win 20XP and 3 coins from this battle.

Mario: Yay! Battling is good!

Goomba King: There you are, Mario! After all these years, I have caught up with you! I heard about that terrible news going on and I’ve been training quite a while. Will you let me help you?

Mario: Okay! I like making friends during adventures!

G&W: Congratulations! The Goomba King has joined your team. He has recently got a diploma from the University of Goom. Along with stomping enemies for 1-2 damage and having tough feet, he can also share his knowledge about enemies and aid us through our puzzles. He is lousy at dodging but can block more damage than normal. Upon joining, he has 10 HP and 5NP.

Mario, with his new friend, reaches the Mushroom Kingdom.

Toad: (running up to Mario) M-Mario! The princess is in trouble! Hurry! Kamek is after her!

Goomba King: Mario! There is a shop there. Buy some stuff first. Since I’m too fat to fit in there, I’ll guard the door.

Shopkeeper: Welcome to Hart T’s Helping Hand. Can I assist you?

Mario: Okay, shopkeeper. I will buy a Mushroom and a Syrup. To be safe, I won’t haggle.

Shopkeeper: 10 coins. Donations are also accepted.

Mario gives 60 coins. He now has 43 coins, 2 Mushrooms, and 2 Syrups.

Shopkeeper: Thank you very much. If you do come by much later I will remodel.

Mario and his party go to the castle but find it locked. Luigi jumps out of the floppy disk at that moment so Mario can dunk him under the door. Luigi opens the door and returns (into the floppy disk). Everyone (somehow including Goomba King) enters.

Kamek: *huff, puff* I’m too old to chase you. Stop moving, you stupid girl, or I will have to kill you.

Peach: No way!

Peach floats to a high platform.

Kamek: Argh, can’t jump, you… must… die…

Before Kamek gets to blast Peach, he faints from exhaustion.

Mario: I don’t know about you, but I think that guy is tough anyway.

Goomba King: Yeah, he has 25 HP, and attack power of 6; he can heal, summon, and do other weird things with his wand. I say we level up first.

Mario, agreeing with this suggestion, finds his Glitzville weights and trains with his party to eventually level up.

G&W: Congratulations! You and Goomba King level up to level 2. You learn the “Summon Brother” Smash move. You have 15 HP and 12 NP. Goomba King now has 20 HP and 8 NP.

Kamek revives and shouts, “So you wanna fight, huh?” The battle starts.

That gray, buzzing, cloudy thing is a Thundercloud. Thunderclouds have 7 HP, 7 Attack, and 0 Defense. As Luigi discovered, although the fact they use electricity is obvious, touching them can hurt you unless you get an electrifying power-up. They also like floating in the air, so really, unless we come across a new attack, jumping still remains effective. They can charge to 15 Attack and attack the next turn, so watch out. When they charge, you take 2 damage for touching them on that turn.

G&W: Good job! You win 20XP and 20 coins. You collect two 1-Up Shrooms.

Mario: Why-a did I earn only 20XP, like the first battle?

G&W: The first battle was only a primer. Besides, you get less XP the more experienced your party is as a whole. I don’t know if there is a specific formula, but it works this way in general.

Peach: Thanks, Mario Bros. And who are you, Mr. Goomba?

Goomba King: I am the great Goomba King.

Peach: The loser that Mario beat up in the prologue of his entry of Paper Mario?

Goomba King: Well, I am much tougher today, and I am now his friend.

Peach: Why is all of this chaos happening?

Game and Watch explains the plot…

G&W: …So now we need to head to Bowser’s castle, since he needs to be filled in on these details.

Peach: There is an emergency pipe to the Keep right there. I am out of shape right now, but I can give you 200 coins.

Mario: Yay! Gimme gimme gimme!

Goomba King: Ehem, what we mean is we greatly appreciate your contributions to preserving Nintendoverse from the UE.

G&W: Okay, let’s go now.

Mario heads to Bowser’s Keep through the warp pipe and enters the castle.
