Winter Wonderland

By Mary Beyer

Hip woke up and looked at his calendar. It was December first. He hopped out of bed and walked downstairs to breakfast. He felt a wonderful breeze come in from a window next to the staircase. Hop was walking by too. Hip, having mostly cool, damp weather in Ice Land,  thought it was enough to freeze you in your tracks. Hip passed Kootie Pie’s room. She had made the snow turn into rain for the past two years. Hip was not going to let her ruin his fun this year. He cast a spell on Kootie Pie’s wand just as half of the snow turned into rain. The rain transformed back into snow.

“Auuuggggggghhhhhhhhh!” Kootie Pie yelled. “Hip! You ruined my rain! You’ll be sorry!”

“Oh no! Don’t let Kootie Pie come after me! She’s sooooooo nasty! Help! Help HELPPPP!” Hip said in mock horror. Hip continued on towards breakfast.

“Yuck. What’s this?” Hip asked Cheatsy, who was the cook for the day. “It looks like… that mud thing Kootie Pie made.”

“Oh, you’re right for once!” Cheatsy said.

“Shut up!” Hip snapped. “But… it smells… different.”

“I just added some Reznor flavor so you could eat it,” Cheatsy said.

“Yeah. Sure. Right,” Hip said. “Just give me those Lava Os.”

“Fine. See if you’ll ever want exotic foods again. I’ll never make it again!” Cheatsy proclaimed. There was a long cheer from everyone at the table. “Oh, quiet.”

“This is exotic…” Hop said. “It’s exotic junk.”

“Yaaaaaaay!” The other Koopalings besides Cheatsy chorused. Cheatsy ran towards Bowser’s throne room.

“King Dad! King Dad!” Cheatsy screeched.

“What?” Bowser asked.

“They made fun of my cooking!” Cheatsy whined.

“Yeah, that’s nice. I won’t have any more fighting inside. It’s giving me a headache,” Bowser said. He got up off the throne and walked into the kitchen, where everyone was happily enjoying Lava Os. They were just pretending to enjoy it in case Cheatsy came back. Only Hip and Hop really enjoyed it. Cheatsy had sworn off the stuff.

“Okay kids, now all of you go out side and play in the snow,” Bowser ordered.

“Okay! I love cold weather!” Hip said.

“No! We hate cold weather!” the others said.

“Well, if you do go outside, you can hit everyone with snow balls and… hey, where’d everyone go?” Bowser asked the empty room.

All the Koopalings were already outside using old Lakitu clouds to fill up on snowballs. When they were ready they flew in the clouds towards the Mushroom Palace. The Koopalings had researched that Toadstool, no matter what the weather, always took a walk at 10 AM every morning. They waited above the castle entrance. What they did not know was that the princess came out the back entrance. And when she saw the Koopalings ready with a dozen snowballs ready to drop on her the first thing that came out that door, she picked up some snow, molded it into a perfect ball, and hurled it at Big Mouth. It hit him square in the back of the head.

“Hey who did that? They’ll be sorry! Why, I’ll murder them! I’ll throw such a huge snowball at them, they won’t be getting up for weeks! Just lemme at ‘em! I’ll kill ‘em!”

“Tee hee!” Toadstool laughed. Just that little laugh was enough to reach the Koopalings’ ears.

“Aha!” they all cried as one. “Let’s get her!” The Koopalings jumped from their clouds and ran at Toadstool.

Toadstool called into the castle door, "Mario! Luigi!" All the Koopalings stopped in their tracks.

“Mario and Luigi?” they cried.

“Oh, don’t worry,” Toadstool said as Mario and Luigi appeared at the door. “We just want to have a little fun!” And so the snow fight began. It took three hours until all the Koopalings but Hip had caught a cold.

“Dear me!” Princess Toadstool cried. “You all need to come inside!”

“Thanks bud no thanks,” Hop said. “We neeb to get back to the Keeb.”

As they climbed into the Lakitu clouds, Kootie Pie shouted down, “Thanks, ib was fun!” The rest of the Koopalings nodded in agreement. They flew back home, where they had to stay in bed for a week. All except for Hip, who went sledding the next day.
