The Axem Powers

By Wacky Koopa

It was a peaceful day in the Mushroom Kingdom.  Everyone was enjoying themselves, knowing that Bowser had just been defeated yet again and the kingdom was at peace.  But while the winners enjoyed peace, the losers did not…

Right near Barrel Volcano, a large volcano near Bowser’s Castle, two Shy Guys in the Shy Guy Army, their names Ted, a green Shy Guy, and Matt, a black Shy Guy, were looking for something, anything to get their job done.  About 6 hours ago, General Guy had called every private in the Shy Guy Army to search for something that could give the Shy Guys the power boost they needed to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom.  However, no one was having any luck, and these two particular Shy Guys were about to call it quits.

“This is so annoying!” yelled Ted angrily.  “We have been searching for something all day and we haven’t found anything!”

“Chill out, dude,” said Matt quietly, trying to calm his friend down.  “I know this is terrible, but we have to do what the General says.”

Ted looked at Matt like he was crazy.  “Dude, the General has lost it ever since Mario kicked him out of the Toy Box,” Ted replied.  “He’s been giving out stupid orders like this ever since.  I’m about to run away.”

“Dude, you can’t do that,” Matt said in a concerned tone.  “This is the Army; they’ll hunt you down.”

“At this point, I don’t care if they kill me,” Ted stated.

“Would you want your family hearing you say that?” Matt asked.  “Would you want your girlfriend hearing you say that?”

Ted immediately stopped.  He quickly turned around, grabbed Matt, and slammed him to the ground.  “Don’t you dare talk about my family and my girlfriend like that!” Ted screamed at him.  “They aren’t involved in this, so don’t include them.”

“All right, I’m sorry!” Matt replied, completely panic-stricken.

Suddenly, Matt’s walkie-talkie went off.  Ted quickly got off him and Matt picked it up.  “Pvt. Matt, this is Sgt. Guy, do you copy?  Over!” the walkie-talkie replied.  Sgt. Guy was the commander of Ted and Matt’s squad.

Matt quickly pulled the walkie-talkie up to his face.  “Copy, Sgt. Guy, this is Pvt. Matt, what do you need? Over!”

“Have you had any luck locating what General Guy is looking for?  Over!” Sgt. Guy asked.

“That’s a negative, sir,” Matt said.  “But we’ll keep looking.  Over!”

“That’s good, Private.  Over and out!”  The communication went out.

Matt put his walkie-talkie away.  “Well, we’d better keep look…” Matt stopped in mid-sentence.

“Matt?” Ted asked his comrade.  “Matt, are you okay?”

“Check that out, Ted,” Matt said in awe, pointing behind Ted.

Ted turned around and gasped.  There was a red robotic head sitting behind a rock a few yards away from them.  It had closed eyes, a spike on its head, and a snout-looking thing for a mouth.  They approached the head and picked it up.  “What is this?” Ted asked in amazement.

“It looks like a robot head,” Matt answered, “but, it’s odd; I’ve never seen a head like this before.”

“It definitely looks strange,” Ted said in agreement.  He then looked a little farther.  “Dude, look at this.”

They walked a little farther to what seemed to be the rest of the body.  There were two red arms, two red legs, and a cylindrical body.  There also was a red axe with a spike on the top lying near the parts.  “Ted, this seems to be a complete fighting machine,” said Matt with enthusiasm in his voice.  “This could be what General Guy has been looking for.”

“We are in luck that we found it,” Ted said in relief.  “It’s about time; I thought the General was about to completely lose it.”

“We may be in even more luck,” Matt said.  “Look over there.”

Ted looked to see four bodies similar to the one they just found, except these were black, green, yellow, and pink respectively.  “Matt, my friend, I think we found a fighting team!” Ted said happily.

“We’d better take these to General Guy immediately,” Matt stated. “We could get very well rewarded.”

Later…

Ever since the Shy Guys were kicked out of their Toy Box by Mario, they had relocated to a hidden bunker right near Rose Way.  They had set up army tents, a few basketball rims to have some fun, and a training area to get ready for an attack.

Ted and Matt arrived at the front gate of the camp.  A Spy Guy at the front stopped them.  “State your names and ranks, sirs,” the officer said.

“I am Pvt. Matt and this is Pvt. Ted,” Matt quickly responded.

The guard looked through the list.  “You two aren’t supposed to return from searching duty at Barrel Volcano for another two hours.  You’d better have a good reason for coming back this early.”

“We completed our mission,” Matt said.  “We found something that General Guy may be interested in.”

The guard looked interested.  “Really?” he asked.  “Let me see.”  Matt took out the red robot head and the red axe and showed it to the guard.  The guard became excited.  “Hurry, take this and show it to the General; we may finally be able to move on.”

Matt and Ted then ran into the camp.  They continued running until they got to the General’s building.  They then knocked on the door.  An Anti Guy opened it.  “You maggots better have a good reason for interrupting the General’s meditation period.”

Inside…

General Guy was sitting in the middle of a room in a meditative stance with the lights dimmed and a bunch of burning candles and incense around him.  “Huuuuuum – I hate Mario so much,” the General spoke aloud.  “Huuuuuum – I’m going to kill him and his friends and family.”

A Fly Guy hovered over to him.  “Sir, you got a letter from…”

“Huuuuuum – Someone is going to get their arms ripped off if they don’t get out of here right now!” General Guy said angrily while trying to continue to meditate.

“Eep!” the Fly Guy screamed and flew away as fast as he could

Outside…

“So, what do you want?” the obviously agitated Anti Guy asked.

“We found it!” Matt said, out of breath.  “We found the power boost General Guy needs!”

“What?!” the Anti Guy said in shock.  “Well, don’t just stand there; bring it in!

The Anti Guy opened the door.  Matt and Ted walked in to see General Guy sitting in a large chair with a bunch of other Shy Guys standing in a line along the walls.  “Well, what did you two soldiers find?” the general asked.

“We found this,” Matt said and pulled out the entire collection of mechanical parts he and Ted found near Barrel Volcano.

All of the Shy Guys quickly gathered around the parts.  “What is it?” one Shy Guy asked.

“Cpt. Anti Guy, get the scientists to figure out what these things are,” General Guy ordered.

“Yes, sir!” the Anti Guy said as he ran out the door.

General Guy then looked at Matt and Ted.  “I don’t know what you two found, but this may just be what we need to get revenge on the Mushroom Kingdom and on Bowser.”

“Why Bowser, sir?” a nearby Pyro Guy asked.

“We’re going to get revenge on Bowser because after our humiliating defeat in our Toy Box, Bowser kicked us out of his army for good,” General Guy said bitterly.  “Haven’t you ever noticed that after our defeat, Mario has never fought a Shy Guy under the command of Bowser?”

“What about in Mario & Luigi:  Superstar Saga when he and Luigi fought Gunner Guys?” a Groove Guy asked.

“Those don’t count!” General Guy stated angrily.  “They were under the control of Bowletta.”

“What about the Boom Guys in Partners in Time?” a Sky Guy asked.

“They don’t count either; those were back in time, when Shy Guys still fought in Bowser’s army!” General Guy stated.  “Look, my point is, we have been struggling to survive ever since Bowser kicked us out.  We need to do something about that.”

Just then, Cpt. Anti Guy burst through the door with a bunch of Medi Guys.  “I got them!” Cpt. Anti Guy yelled.

“Great!” General Guy said.  “Now then, what do we have here, Medi Guys?”

The Medi Guys went over and checked the mechanical pieces.  They examined them for about an hour before they came to their conclusion.  “General, these are the remains of the Axem Rangers.”

“Axem What?” General Guy asked confusedly.

“The Axem Rangers were a group of soldiers who fought using the axes you see here.  They were built by and worked for a robot named Smithy,” a Medi Guy explained.  “Smithy was from an alternate universe and wanted to conquer all of the universes.  A few years before our battle with Mario, he invaded the Mushroom Kingdom and destroyed the Star Road, which caused seven star fragments to be scattered throughout the Mushroom Kingdom.  Without the Star Road intact, people’s wishes wouldn’t come true.  In the process of his invasion, Smithy kicked Bowser out of his castle.  In order to defeat the Smithy Gang and recover the seven star pieces, Mario and Bowser teamed up, along with Princess Peach and two others named Mallow and Geno.  When they were going for the sixth star piece in Barrel Volcano, they defeated the Czar Dragon that lived there and were about to claim the Star Piece, but the Axem Rangers stole the Star Piece from them.  They then chased them to the Blade, a giant flying ship with a blade on the bow and which the Axem Rangers piloted.  The two groups then fought, but Mario ended up winning, which caused both the Blade and the Axem Rangers to be destroyed.  Mario later went to Smithy’s dimension and defeated him.  The Axem Rangers were among the best fighters in the Smithy Gang.  These are the remains of the Axem Rangers that Mario defeated.  My guess is that the pieces of the Blade are around Barrel Volcano as well.”

“So, these guys were defeated by Mario as well,” General Guy said happily.  “This means that we would have a common goal.  Plus, they were defeated by Bowser as well, so they hate him too.  Can we rebuild and revive them?”

“Yes,” the Medi Guy replied.

“Start the construction now; I want these guys operational right away!”  General Guy commanded.

“Yes, sir!” the Medi Guy replied.  They then grabbed the pieces of the Axem Rangers and took them to the laboratory.

“Tell the other soldiers searching to quit and come back to base, Sgt. Guy,” General Guy stated.

“Right on it, sir,” Sgt. Guy responded.  He then left the building.

“I want the rest of you out except for you two,” General Guy said, pointing at Matt and Ted.

“Yes, sir!” everyone responded and then they quickly left.

General Guy then walked over to Matt and Ted.  “I want to congratulate you two on finding the Axem Rangers for us.  Because of you soldiers, the Shy Guys can finally reign supreme.”

“We are thankful for your thanks, sir,” Ted replied.

“And for finding these soldiers, I want to move you guys up a rank in the army,” General Guy stated.

“Really?” Matt asked with enthusiasm in his voice.

“Yes; I am now granting you the ranks of Corporal,” General Guy stated.  He then took off their Private pins and put on Corporal pins.

“This is fantastic,” Ted said happily.  “Thank you, sir.”

“No problem; it’s the least I can do to thank you guys for finding the Axem Rangers,” General Guy replied.  “Now, go head over to the Private bunks and collect your things.  You will be heading over to the Corporal bunks.  You are dismissed”

“Thank you, sir,” Matt stated, and he and Ted left the General’s bunker.  They looked happily towards the sky.  “Dude, this is great,” Matt said after a long period of silence.

“I know,” Ted replied.  “We really came through this time.”

“Something tells me that life is gonna be good from now on,” Matt said.

A day later…

General Guy was pacing within his quarters.  He was trying to come up with a strategy to takeover the Mushroom Kingdom.  A knock came from the door.  “Proceed,” General Guy said without looking up.

A Medi Guy walked through the door.  “Sir, we finished them,” the Medi Guy said.

General Guy stopped pacing and looked at the Medi Guy.  “You are?” he asked with a curious look on his face.  “I didn’t expect them to be done for a few more days.  Well, if they are finished, bring them in.  Bring in the commanders as well; I need them to see this.”

“Yes, sir!” the Medi Guy replied as he walked out.  A few minutes later, all of the leading officers in the army were standing inside the general’s building, including Matt and Ted.

Matt leaned over to Ted.  “Do you have any idea what these Axem Rangers are like?” he whispered.

“I haven’t a clue,” Ted whispered back.  “But we’re about to find out.”

The Medi Guys were walking through the door.  They wheeled in five cylindrical tubes, each one containing an unconscious but fully rebuilt Axem Ranger.  They brought them up to General Guy.  “They are lifeless right now,” one of the Medi Guys stated, “but with a push of a button, they will be brought to life.  Whom would you like to bring back first?”

“Axem Red was the leader, right?  I’d like to speak to him first,” General Guy replied.  A Medi Guy then walked up the chamber containing Axem Red.  He pushed a green button on the side of the tube.  A cloud of smoke filled the chamber and the door opened up.  Axem Red’s body fell to the ground…and then started to move.

He looked confusedly around the room.  “Huh?  Where am I?” he asked out loud.

“Relax, Axem Red,” General Guy said to the confused Ranger.  “You are in a Shy Guy army camp.”

Axem Red looked up at General Guy.  “Who are you?”

“I am General Guy,” he responded.  “I am the general of the Shy Guy army that has brought you back to life.”

“How do you know my name?” Axem Red asked.

“I know more about you than just your name,” General Guy stated.  “I know that Smithy built you, I know that you traveled on the Blade, I know that Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Peach defeated you and your team in combat…”

“My team!” Axem Red suddenly exclaimed.  “Where are they?!”

“Relax,” General Guy said calmly.  “They are right behind you.”

Axem Red turned around to see the rest of the Axem Rangers inside their chambers.  “Why aren’t they awake?”

“They are still lifeless,” General Guy answered, “but we can put life into them like we did to you.  Do you want us to do that?”

“Yes, if you could,” Axem Red replied.

Four Medi Guys walked over to the chambers.  They then pressed the green button on the side of their tubes.  The same cloud of smoke that appeared in Axem Red’s chamber filled the rest of the Rangers’ tubes.  The chambers then opened up; the bodies inside hit the floor and then started to move.

“Ow, my head,” Axem Black said, rubbing his head.

“Where are we, Red?” Axem Green asked his leader.

“We are in some kind of Shy Guy army camp,” Axem Red answered.

“Is there any food here?” Axem Yellow asked.

“Get him some food,” General Guy said to the other Shy Guys.

“I’ve got a burger left over from my dinner yesterday,” a white Shy Guy said.

“Give it to him, Colonel,” General Guy ordered.  The White Shy Guy pulled out the burger and threw it over to Axem Yellow.  He caught it and started to eat.

“Leave it to Yellow to jump to food,” Axem Black said, chuckling.

“Why are we here, Red?” Axem Pink asked.

“That’s a good question, Pink,” Axem Red stated.  He turned around to General Guy.  “Why are we here, General?”

General Guy stood up and walked over to the Axem Rangers.  “You don’t know this, but like you guys, my army and I were defeated by Mario.  I have despised him ever since, and I want revenge.”

“Don’t worry,” Axem Green said, “Master Smithy will defeat Mario no problem.”

General Guy sighed heavily.  “That won’t be happening, because after you guys were defeated, Mario went to your dimension and defeated Smithy.”

“NO!” Axem Red shouted, pounding his fist into the ground.  The other Axem Rangers looked absolutely stunned; even Axem Yellow looked up from his meal in shock.  “Is there any chance we can save him?” Axem Red asked.

“I doubt it,” General Guy said.  “It’s been more than 10 years since Smithy was defeated.”

“10 years!” Axem Black said confusedly.  “We’ve been dead for that long?”

“I haven’t applied makeup in 10 years?” Axem Pink said worriedly.  “I probably look hideous.”  She took out her mirror and looked at herself.  “I do look hideous.”  She took out her makeup and immediately started to apply it.

“Anyway,” General Guy continued, “I have wanted revenge on Mario for what he did to me.  I wanted to find a power source to upgrade the strength of my army.  Instead, though, Corporals Matt and Ted over there,” General Guy pointed over to them, “found you guys.”

“So, you want us in your army to get revenge on Mario?” Axem Red asked.

“Not just Mario,” General Guy stated, “I want revenge on the whole Mushroom Kingdom.  Plus, I want revenge on Bowser as well.”

“Why didn’t you just say so?” Axem Red asked happily.  “I need to give Mario, Bowser, and the whole Mushroom Kingdom a little payback.”

“Don’t forget the other three,” Axem Yellow said, having finished his burger, “Peach, Mallow, and Geno.”

“Yeah, we need to get revenge on them too,” Axem Green exclaimed.

“Well, General, shall we get revenge on them too?” Axem Red asked.

“I wasn’t defeated by them,” General Guy said, “but I will help you get revenge on them, as long as you help me get revenge on the ones who defeated me.”

“Deal!” Axem Red said, and the two leaders shook hands.

“All right, we set up a bunker for you guys to stay in,” General Guy said. “Go and get some rest, for tomorrow, the Mushroom Kingdom is going to pay!”
