The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX Review

By Lord Seth

Genre: RPG
Platform: Game Boy/Game Boy Color
ESRB Rating: E for Everyone

It is very important to note that the "DX" part means "Deluxe", showing that this one is in COLOR! Yep, it's a
lot like the original, but it's colorized for your Game Boy Color. One of the best GB games came to GBC. The game's a little dated, but... it's still good. Other than the color, there are a few other differences. For example, there's now a Camera Shop, and at various points in the game this mouse guy will show up and take pictures of you. Also, there's an all-new (and very secret) COLOR DUNGEON, where color DOES matter. I only played the original The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for a few minutes, so I can't quite contrast the two very well. By the way, this game works on Game Boy! Sure, you can't access the Color Dungeon, but it's still good.

The storyline is pretty simple: Link gets shipwrecked on a place called Koholint Isle, and to get off he needs to supposedly get all eight of these special musical instruments to wake the Wind Fish.

As usual, this will be out of five stars.

Graphics: ****

Pretty good graphics, especially compared to the original.

Sound and Music: *** 1/2

A lot of the music is good, but most of the sound isn't especially impressive.

Difficulty: **** 1/2

Like you'd expect, this Zelda game takes difficulty to the max. Just like all the others... you'll almost certainly
need help from a guide or just a friend to beat it.

Controls: ***

Some of the controls are annoying. First, out of the more than six weapons, you can only use two at a time. Also, it's difficult to press all four buttons at once to save your game.

Levels: *** 1/2

"Levels" means dungeons in this game. Most are extremely intricate, and some are hard to just get to. Plus, to explore it well you'll need the Compass AND the Map.

Concept: *** 1/2

Unfortunately, I can't tell you part of the reason for the concept because it would ruin the ending. Still, Link
being marooned on an island with no way out except possibly gathering all eight musical instruments and waking the Wind Fish is fairly new...

Story: ** 1/2

Unlike most RPGs, this doesn't have too much of a story. It's basically what I explained in Concept about the
island.

Replayability: ****

There's quite a bit of replayability in this game. Why? Well, let's look at the next category...

Secrets: **** 1/2

Lots of secrets, especially the Secret Seashells. The annoying thing about them is you have to keep visiting
Seashell Mansion to get all of them, as you can only get two of them when you have an exact number of them when you visit the Mansion. Plus, you can try to find all the Heart Containers, get all of the photographs, and more. And let's not forget the four Warp Portals scattered about Koholint...

Fun Factor!: **** 1/2

Frustrating yet fun, like Donkey Kong Country, I guess you could say. Getting through the dungeons is really hard...

OVERALL: **** 1/2

Is this a good buy? Yes. Is it a good buy if you have the original? It is if you always wanted it in color and
wouldn't mind some new features. Oh, and I'll give you a hint on how to get to the top-secret Color Dungeon: The answer is in the library.
