Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Review

By Iggy Koopa

Today I will be reviewing Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Nintendo GameCube! The scores will be out of 7 because there are seven Chaos Emeralds.

Story: 7

This is the best story out of any game I’ve played! Dr. Eggman breaks through the military to their top secret weapon, Shadow. Eggman releases it, and it turns out to be a black hedgehog named Shadow, who greatly resembles Sonic. He grants Eggman one wish, and they plan to steal all the Chaos Emeralds, which have great power, to use in the space colony ARK for its main weapon, the Eclipse Cannon! So while Shadow steals a Chaos Emerald, the military’s top group, G.U.N., are chasing after Sonic, because they think he robbed the Chaos Emerald! And so starts the adventure…

Characters: 6

There are six total characters to choose from in 1P mode, and 12 in 2P! In story mode, you can be:

Sonic: Fast and a great jumper. Sonic is so fast, he can outrun a giant truck! His homing attack obviously homes in on enemies, but sometimes it can be trouble. His high jumping ability get him out of tight spots, but he can also bounce higher than his jump.

Tails: Unfortunately, Tails’ levels aren’t as fun as in previous Sonic games. Before, he could fly and whirl around his tails to attack. Now they put him in a robotic walker that can shoot lasers and missles. It may sound fun, but it’s the fact he could be going his old ways which is much more fun.

Knuckles: The master treasure hunter. He barely got into the story because he spent most of his time away form the others. He can glide through the air and dig into the ground. He has to search for the pieces of the Master Emerald so his home, Angel Island, doesn’t fall down into Earth.

Dr. Eggman: The main bad guy of all the other Sonic games, but this time around you can control him! He plays just like Tails, in a robotic walker. He is in charge of the whole Dark Side story, until the end when he has to actually SAVE the world.

Shadow: Plays just Sonic’s levels. Shadow is the so called “Ultimate Life Form” but little does he know, he’s not the only one who goes by that name… Shadow looks just like Sonic, only with black fur.

Rouge: A bat who loves jewels. She tried to steal the Master Emerald from Knuckles, but now she has to find the lost pieces before he does. Later on, she goes to work for Dr. Eggman, but she is really a spy for the president. She wants to try and see what he’s planning and what Shadow really is.

2-Player Characters: The extra characters in 2P are Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Tikal, Chaos 0, Chao Walker, and Dark Chao Walker. They each have attacks to use, but some are stronger than others, which means they are slower.

Items: 5.5

Nothing new. Everything is from previous Sonic games. The invincibility is a bit different, and the normal shield is a different color, but that’s about it. In fact, they even took away two types of shields form the older Sonic games on the Sega Genesis that were very useful. Here are the items: 5 Rings, 10 Rings, 20 Rings, Shield, Magnet Shield, Speed Up, and Invincibility.

Graphics: 6

Okay, so since this game was from Dreamcast, they aren’t up to GCN’s standards, even with the slight improvements. During some cinema scenes, the graphics are just beautiful! I don’t know why they didn’t use them for the whole game. Oh well, after playing the game, you won’t mind them.

Music 7

Fantastic! This game has the greatest songs! They are just so well made! Not only are they something new, you also get the same feeling like from older Sonic games. The Action Stages have the best songs out of the bunch, and each character has their own theme song!

Difficulty: 7

This game gives you both hard and easy things, so it’s perfect for everyone! Although younger players may need some time to finish the main part of the game, older ones can finish it within a few days. You think that means the game is short, but really, it’s very long. There are many different missions to go through, and some of them are very hard.

Replay Value: 7

There are 180 emblems to collect, which means you’ll be playing the game for a while to collect them. After you collect them all, you get a secret stage, the “Green Hill Zone”, which is the very first level in Sonic’s first game. But there are these little cute creatures called Chao. While in the Action Stages, you collect animals, which improves their status and changes how they look! You also collect Chaos Drives after defeating G.U.N. robots. They only improve status, but more than animals do. Unfortunately, Chao will die after a while. But, if they like you, they will leave an egg with a Chao inside that has the same name and status as your previous one. If you were not good to them, then the Chao is gone forever.

Fun Factor!: 7

This game is just amazing. It is my favorite GCN game! Great music, lots of fun, and an amazing reply value! This game is a must have for all Sonic fans! If you’re not a Sonic fan, then try it, 'cause you’ll still love it! If you absolutely hate Sonic, then I’ll kill you… uh, I mean still try it.
