Mario Superstar Baseball Review

By Denny W. Koopa

Over the years, America’s favorite pastime has reached Plit. All the Mario Heroes and Villains, and Weird Plant and Shell Things are playing baseball! Are any of them good? We’ll find out as I review Mario Baseball!

System: GameCube
Rated: E for Embarrassed Eeries
Produced by: Nintendo and Namco, N and N!

I will rate this game on a 1 to 9 scale, for that’s how many innings there are in a baseball game! 9 is the best.

Graphics: 7

What would you expect from a GameCube game, really good graphics! I could complain about the map in Challenge Mode, but I won’t even bother…

Music/Sound: 4

There’s music? All I really notice is the Challenging theme, and the replay and home run themes. Sure, the places have music, but you don’t really have any patience to stop and listen to it. The sounds are back with the Piantas' strange language and the Nokis' Moaning. Goomba is now at the stage where Yoshi was about six or seven years ago, the electronic voice. However, the most annoying voice in the game would have to be Magikoopa with his “Nyah-Nyah!” I guess he’s a Bowyer fan…

Gameplay

Batting: 6

Batting is okay. Most players have bats, but some lost theirs so they use their fists, leaves, TREES? Well, it’s kind of funny seeing the characters' bats, but most of the power hitters have horrible reach, and some tall players (Ahem, Waluigi) have you press down to hit the ball. But enough complaining, I prefer to charge up when you see the pitcher is about to throw the ball, but only if it’s your friend! The computers catch the ball easily! Do anything else, just plain hit the ball! You can also use power shots to make your ball harder to catch, like a fireball, a Bullet Bill, or a Yoshi egg!

Pitching: 5

It’s easy, but nothing special… Just hold A to charge up and try to let go at your max power. I, however, gave up on this way, and just let the opponents hit. (I like catching the ball.)

Fielding: 8

My favorite! There is usually a spot on the field marked where the ball will land. If you think you will just barely miss catching the ball, press A right when it’s about to land, and you will dive for it, or somehow catch it! Then, just throw it to the bases. This can be a little tricky at first, but right is 1st base, up is 2nd, left is 3rd, and down is Home Plate. Remember this, and you will master the game soon!

Modes

Exhibition: 7

This is pretty fun! It would be a lot better if you could have the colored characters on your side too… Oh well! I would only recommend this mode for playing a friend, practicing, or if you are really, really, REALLY bored.

Challenge: 9

What I think brings the game to life! Despite the graphics of the map, this is almost perfect! Choose one of five team captains, Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Wario, or DK, and challenge all other teams to unlock a fight with Bowser. Some people think it’s really hard, but actually, all you have to do is get all the characters' specials, get money (preferably from Baby Bowser or Bob-oomb Derby), and buy a Nice Bat or the Dash Spikes and you can win a game easily.

Toy Field: 4

Not the best idea that Nintendo has ever had, though it’s a LOT better than Mario Kart Double Dash's Block City! Basically, you try to get the ball, hit it, and collect coins. (NOTE: If you do not want to become frustrated and destroy your GameCube, then avoid this mode.)

Mini-Games: 5

I wouldn’t call these games too fun!

Bob-omb Derby is where you charge up and hit Bob-ombs at different speeds. This can get rather boring in a while, however…

Wall Ball is where you charge up to try to hit a Note Block through brick walls, but not a Bowser Block. This game takes patience, and it may take awhile to finish a couple of games.

Chain Chomp Sprint is my favorite games; it’s like red light, green light, except you’re collecting gems while running around the bases.

Piranha Panic is where you throw the right colored eggs at the same colored Piranha Plants. This game is nearly impossible to beat, for if you throw eggs at the wrong one, they’ll fire fireballs at you.

Barrel Blaster is like one of those puzzle games where you have hit a colored barrel connected to a lot more. Don’t be too patient in your thinking, though! The machine might shoot when you’re not paying attention!

My advice is to just stick to the Mario Party mini-games.

Replayability: 5

Once you beat the game, it gets quite boring, and all that’s left to do is win MVP for all of the characters.

Fun Factor!: 6

This game is fun while it lasts, but once you beat it, it gets pretty boring. The most fun thing to do is to play your friends. (I always get runs by bunting)

Overall: 6/9

Mario Superstar Baseball is just over the average score. What would I say for this game? Just rent it until the price goes down, thwn buy it. That’s all for this game!
