Dirk Valentine and the Fortress of Steam Review

By Nintenbro0

This is my first online game Review! And I'll be reviewing the extremely popular Dirk Valentine and the Fortress of Steam! This game is short, remember, but it is extremely fun and fulfilling! To play this game you need to go to www.nitrome.com.

System: Computer
Genre: Action
Players: 1
Rating: E
Price: Free!
Developer: Nitrome Limited

Story:

It is 1897 in a steampunk world! Baron Von Battenberg has kidnapped the queen of England and taken her aboard his floating steam castle! With his minions everywhere, Dirk Valentine must travel through the castle to find Baron and finally defeat him!

Graphics: *****

Okay, right off, the graphics were awesome. They were pixilated like in Super Mario World only extremely detailed! Everything was great, from the orange sky background to Dirk's bear! A very, very nice touch was how good the inside of the ship looked. It’s almost like a factory with robots everywhere. It’s coated with dark green of course. Even the blimps flying in the background were really detailed! Do shiny graphics make it a good game? No. But it sure does help!

Sound: *****

There were two songs, one for the menu and one for the game. Kind of not a lot... but what can you expect from an online game? The songs they did have were very well done! One feels so peaceful as you surf the menu, and one’s fast-paced and very fun! They never got old and I hum both to myself when I'm bored at times!

The voices they did have (Dirk's) were great as well. He mainly just went "hup" as he jumped but it sounded good. Not annoying like a lot of voices!

The effects were perfect. There’s the door opening, an elevator rising, jumping sounds, and different noises depending on where you land! Everything worked and sounded great!

Difficulty:  *****

Okay, I know all the perfect scores so far sound... incredible. But it is incredible! The game was easy enough that you can beat it, but it had challenges in it too. Like jumping across moving platforms and having a ton of minions dive at you all at once! There was only one part that got me a bit frustrated through the entire game. So yes... this game is very good!

Replayability: ***

It was fun and I'd play it all over a second time... but it wouldn't be as fun knowing what the ending is. But either way, I'd enjoy it. It doesn't have much to do after you beat it, though, other than go for the high scores... So yeah, fun if you like the levels a ton!

Characters: ****

Okay, there was Dirk, minions, Baron, the queen, annnnnnnnd old men you can save. Not many. But the ones they do have rock! All of them are extremely cool! Not much more to go on about here...

Controls: *****

I had no trouble using the controls! You use the mouse to shoot the chain gun and you move with the arrow keys... What more do you need? Sometimes having to hit buttons in order to shoot gets a bit complicated but that was easily done with speed.

Items: ***

Only one item that gives you like 10 points or something. You collect them... There arem’t any others so an average score.

Levels: *****

Almost every level in the ship was somewhere different! There’s a control room, engine room, roof room, welding room, and more! I mean, every room was really awesome! Some had lasers, some had cannons, and others just had minions! Or... giant... robots... which is fine by me! I had a lot of fun sightseeing throughout the levels... though every one looks like you’re in a green factory... It looks... well, different! It’s hard to explain other than... all look similar but very different! Some are outside on top of the roof or on ledges, too.

Gameplay: ****

Okay, I wasn't sure what to give here. So I went with four. You spend each level doing mainly the same thing, shooting your chain gun and hitting enemies. But it never got old! Maybe it’s because new things happen. They introduce new enemies... and obstacles. I dunno, but whatever magic they do, it works.

Fun Factor!: *****

Yes, it is very fun! Very, very, very, very fun! I loved everything in the game! ... What more can I say? Haha!

Recommendation: Let me review... It’s steampunk, it’s free, it’s insanely fun, and it saves your progress? If you need more than that, you’re crazy! This game is incredibly fun and I definitely recommend it!
